Strategic management of patents on electrochemical conversion fuel cells and batteries in Latin America as a mechanism for moving towards energy sustainability

Abstract Electrochemical conversion batteries (ECBs), especially fuel cells and lithium-ion (LIBs), are the focus of attention scientific community due to their potential contribution decarbonization economy. In this context, objective is analyze patent publication flows on LIBs in Latin America (LATAM) by proposing a technology adoption matrix, Patents friendly sustainable technologies (PFST) indicator, use s-curves. Data collection analysis were carried out using PatSeer knowledge base, Gephi, VantagePoint, Loglet Lab software. The results show leadership Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, with high dependence United States, Japan, Germany. PFST indicates that 79.3% published patents address climate change mitigation. general, there low rate ECB LATAM, marked technological lag evolution key technologies. more than those related LIB. Under scenario, it unlikely LATAM will achieve necessary competitiveness produce complex field. regard, follows reverse position traditional exporters value-added commodities, these countries should formulate strategies allow development innovation ecosystem, promoting open applied mechanisms, subsidized adoption, greater integration universities and, at same time, strengthening currently lead transfer others great such as China South Korea.
